San Juan Bautista
San Juan is located in the North of Ibiza and is probably the area least affected by conventional tourism: traditionally rural, it hosts the largest number of agritourism hotels in the whole of Ibiza. Visitors come here to take a step back in time on days when the island was a quiet Spanish stagnation.
The main village is dominated by the whitewashed 18th century church, while the rest of the architecture is not all traditional whitewashed and cubic white Ibicenco houses.
There is an air of almost Atlantic Spain with houses built of stone with sloping roofs on the outskirts of the village.
The main street of the area, decorated with flowers, wrought iron balconies and ancient wooden doors lead visitors on pebbles and steps, conveying a sense of peace and tranquility without comparison.
Here and there the scent of garlic, the hiss of coffee machines and the chatter of customers in bars.
San Juan Market
Every Sunday San Juan comes to life with a delicious craft market in the village square in front of the church. There is a large selection of organic products and handicrafts, such as homemade Hierbas (Ibiza herbal liqueur), organic bread, island fruit such as figs and almonds, handmade soap, leather clothing, candles, jewelry and much more.
At noon local bands play live on the square and there are local bars where you can have a drink or a snack. The market is held all year round and is very popular among the islanders and tourists.
Feast of San Juan
The day 24th June is the day of the patron saint of the village San Juan, San Giovanni Battista. The evening before, June 23th, the party is anticipated by firecrackers and bonfires to drive away evil spirits and welcome the summer.
There is a great custom this night, to which anyone can easily participate: all you have to do is write a list of all the bad things happened in the last year and then throw it in one of the many small bonfires scattered in the village.
